My first interview question at Sodatone was "What's your relationship with music?". Here's mine:
I'm a drummer, and started playing when I was 6 years old. I started a punk band called Phasma in middle school, and we started releasing YouTube cover videos when we were 12. Those first videos were so bad that we actually went viral. 🙃
We kept at it, recorded a handful of EPs in my basement, made a few AdSense Blogger dollars, played gigs around Toronto, and eventually opened for The Salads. My first startup!
Here's some of our music from back in the day:
Outside of Phasma, I played in every school band, and I owe my professional career to one in particular — a Beatles cover band put together by my eighth-grade music teacher. He personally invested thousands of dollars in professional studio time, rehearsed with us for hundreds of hours during recess and after school, and booked + drove us to gigs.
At 13 years old, it was a magical experience that changed my life. We recorded in the same room as The Rolling Stones and Sean Paul, and sold a few hundred copies of our album. It's truly the kindest thing that anyone has ever done for me.
